Best time to visit South India’s hill stations

The best time to visit South India hill stations depends on the hill station. Some are at their best in winter, some in summer, and a few in the monsoon. This guide gives the months that suit each place, and explains how the rains change a trip. Use it to pick your month first and your destination second.

Month by month, by destination

Coorg is most comfortable from October to March. The weather is cool and dry, and the estates are easy to walk. June to September brings heavy rain and very green scenery.

Chikkamagaluru is at its best from September to March. Treks to Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri are clearer and safer in these months. The monsoon makes the trails slippery.

Wayanad works well from October to May. Waterfalls are strongest after the rains, but some trails and viewpoints close for safety during heavy showers.

Ooty and Kodaikanal are popular from March to June, when visitors from the plains escape the heat. They are also pleasant from September to November, usually with smaller crowds. December and January are colder, especially at night.

Yercaud is comfortable for much of the year, and October to June is generally easy. Sakleshpur is clearest from October to February and is lush in the monsoon.

What the monsoon changes

The monsoon, roughly June to September, turns the hills deep green and fills the waterfalls. It also brings heavy rain, slippery paths and the occasional road disruption. Some visitors prefer it for the scenery and the quieter stays.

If you travel in the monsoon, build in flexibility. Keep a spare day, check which activities are open and avoid long night drives. Pack rain gear, spare shoes and insect repellent.

Summer holiday crowds

March to June is the busiest period at Ooty and Kodaikanal. Roads are crowded, and stays fill fast. Book early, travel on weekdays if you can and start your drives early in the morning.

Festivals can also change the picture. Mysuru, for example, is busiest during Dasara. If you want to see a festival, plan well ahead. If you want quiet, avoid those dates.

Packing and planning tips by season

In the cool months, pack warm layers for the evenings and a light jacket for the day. In summer, carry sun protection and a hat, and book early for the busiest weeks. In the monsoon, carry a rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and a waterproof cover for your bag.

Roads in the hills are narrow, so give yourself extra time. Avoid planning two long drives on consecutive days, and keep one flexible day for weather.

Choosing your month

Start with the month you can travel. For December to February, think of Coorg, Chikkamagaluru, Hampi or Wayanad. For April and May, think of Ooty or Kodaikanal. For the monsoon, think of Wayanad, Coorg or Sakleshpur, and accept some flexibility.

Then match the place to your group. Families with young children often prefer shorter drives and calm weather. Friend groups may enjoy treks and waterfalls in the wetter months.

Tell us your month and who is travelling. The TripBanao team will suggest hill stations that suit that season, check availability and confirm the final price before anything is booked.
