Coorg: hills, coffee and tea plantations
15 October 2024

Coorg, also called Kodagu, is a hill region in Karnataka known for coffee and tea plantations. Mist-covered hills, estates and viewpoints make it a favourite for a relaxed break from the city. It is about 250 km from Bengaluru, so it suits a weekend or a longer stay.
Plantations and estate stays
Coffee and spice estates cover much of Coorg. Many stays sit inside working estates, so the plantation is part of the experience. Early-morning walks, estate meals and quiet evenings are the main attractions.
Madikeri is the main town. Most stays are spread through the estates around it, so the drive between sights is part of the trip.
Things to see and do
Abbey Falls and other waterfalls near Madikeri are popular, especially after the rains. Raja’s Seat gives sunset views over the valley. The Dubare elephant camp on the Cauvery river is a favourite with families.
Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe adds a different side to the trip. It is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India, and it is open to visitors. A walk through the estates is the simplest way to enjoy Coorg.
When to visit
October to March is the most comfortable season, with cool and dry weather. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and very green hills. Some visitors prefer the rainy months for the scenery and slower pace.
Getting there from Bengaluru
Most visitors drive via Mysuru or Kushalnagar, which takes about five and a half to six and a half hours. Coorg has no railway station or airport of its own. The nearest are at Mysuru and Mangaluru, so a car is the practical choice.
A sample weekend in Coorg
Reach Madikeri by Saturday afternoon and watch the sunset at Raja’s Seat. On Sunday, visit Abbey Falls and the Dubare elephant camp, then drive back in the evening. With a third day, add Bylakuppe and a longer estate walk.
Practical tips for Coorg
Leave early on Saturday, because the last stretch of ghat roads is slow. Carry rain gear from June to September. Book plantation stays well ahead for long weekends. Keep some cash for small shops, because mobile signal can be weak in the estates.
Where to stay and who Coorg suits
Options range from estate homestays to larger resorts. Homestays feel personal and simple. Resorts offer more facilities, such as pools and spas. Tell us your group size and preferences and we shortlist stays.
Coorg suits families, couples and friend groups who want nature, quiet and good food more than a packed sightseeing list.
Many travellers pair Coorg with Mysuru on the way, or with Chikkamagaluru on a longer trip. The hills share a similar climate, so pack the same layers. Ask us to plan a route that links them with comfortable drives.
