Weekend getaways from Bengaluru by road
24 October 2026

Weekend getaways from Bengaluru by road are easy to plan, because hills, forests and heritage towns sit within a few hours of the city. A Saturday-to-Sunday trip works well for families, couples and groups of friends. This guide covers seven options. For each one you get the typical drive time, the best season and one thing worth booking early.
Drive times below are typical figures. Traffic, the day you travel and the exact town you stay in can change them.
Closest options: 3 to 5 hours away
Mysuru is the shortest and easiest drive. It is about 145 to 150 km and usually takes three to three and a half hours. The palace, Chamundi Hills and the Devaraja Market fill a long day. A second day adds Brindavan Gardens.
Sakleshpur is about 220 to 225 km away and takes four and a half to five hours. It suits travellers who want green hills, plantation stays and short walks. It is quieter than Coorg and good for small groups.
Bandipur is also about four and a half to five hours away. It is a tiger reserve, so the trip revolves around safaris and forest walks. Plan to travel in daylight, because the highway through the reserve restricts night traffic.
Yercaud, in Tamil Nadu, is about 210 to 220 km away. It is a small, calm hill station with a lake and several viewpoints. Most people see the main points in a day and spend the rest of the time relaxing.
Further afield: 5 to 6.5 hours
Kabini is about five to five and a half hours from Bengaluru. It is built around wildlife safaris on the backwaters of Nagarhole. Safaris run in the morning and evening, so an overnight stay is a must.
Chikkamagaluru, also known as Chikmagalur, is about five to six hours away. It is coffee country with peaks, waterfalls and estate stays. Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, is the signature climb.
Coorg is the classic plantation weekend. It is about 250 km away and takes five and a half to six and a half hours. Waterfalls, coffee estates and viewpoints make it a favourite with Bengaluru families.
How to choose between them
Think about what your group enjoys. For heritage and food, choose Mysuru. For wildlife, choose Bandipur or Kabini. For coffee estates and walks, choose Coorg or Chikkamagaluru. For quiet hills with little planning, choose Sakleshpur or Yercaud.
Also think about the season. October to March suits most of these places. The monsoon makes the hills very green, but it can close trails and slow the roads.
Booking tips for long weekends
Stays fill early in long weekends and school holidays. Decide your dates first, then ask for availability well ahead. Leave early on Saturday, because the last stretch of ghat roads is slow.
Keep a flexible plan in the monsoon. Check which viewpoints and trails are open before you finalise the schedule. Carry a rain jacket and avoid driving after dark on hill and forest roads.
