Ooty: the Queen of Hill Stations

Ooty, short for Udhagamandalam, is a hill station in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu. It began as a summer retreat in the British era. Today it is still known as the Queen of Hill Stations. Cool air, tea country and colonial-era charm draw families and couples all year.

What makes Ooty special

The town sits high in the Western Ghats, so the climate is mild even when the plains are hot. Tea estates cover the surrounding slopes. Eucalyptus and pine forests add to the cool, green feel.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO-listed heritage line. It climbs from Mettupalayam through tunnels and bridges. Many visitors plan a ride, so check the booking rules in advance.

Things to see and do

The Government Botanical Garden is a calm place for a morning walk. Ooty Lake offers boating and a lakeside stroll. Doddabetta Peak gives wide views over the Nilgiris on clear days.

Tea estates and tea factories offer tours that explain how leaves become tea. Pykara and nearby viewpoints suit a half-day drive. Coonoor, a smaller hill town nearby, pairs well with Ooty.

When to visit

March to June is the popular summer-escape season, and crowds are highest then. September to November is usually calmer. December and January are colder, especially at night. The monsoon is wet and misty.

Getting there from Bengaluru

Ooty is about 270 km from Bengaluru. Most travellers drive via Mysuru and Gudalur, which takes roughly six and a half to eight hours. Some forest stretches restrict night travel, so plan to drive in daylight.

A sample three-day Ooty plan

Day one: drive up via Mysuru and settle in. Visit Ooty Lake in the evening. Day two: see the Botanical Garden in the morning and Doddabetta Peak in the afternoon. Day three: tour a tea estate and visit Coonoor before the drive back.

Practical tips for Ooty

Carry a light jacket, even in summer, because evenings are cool. Book the mountain railway and popular stays early during school holidays. Drive in daylight on the forest sections, and leave extra time for traffic on weekends.

Weekdays are calmer than weekends. If you want fewer crowds, travel from September to November or choose a stay outside the main town.

Who Ooty suits and where to stay

Ooty suits families, couples and older travellers who want gentle sightseeing and cool weather. It is less suited to travellers who want wildlife, beaches or nightlife.

Stays range from heritage hotels in the town to cottages and estate homes on the slopes. Choose the town for convenience and the slopes for quiet. Tell us your group size and we shortlist options.
