Wayanad: misty hills and forests
1 October 2024

Wayanad is a hill district in Kerala, in the south-west of India. It is known for forested hills, waterfalls, caves and plantations. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the east is a lush, green region. It suits nature lovers and families looking for a quiet getaway.
What to expect
Wayanad rewards a slow trip. The drives between viewpoints are short, and most stays sit among spice and tea plantations. Many visitors spend their time on easy walks, waterfalls and quiet evenings.
The roads are winding, so plan fewer stops each day. Choose one base for two nights instead of moving daily.
A typical day covers one or two main sights, a plantation walk and an early dinner. This pace keeps children and older relatives comfortable. It also leaves room for rain, which can change the plan at short notice. Carry some cash for small shops, because card machines and mobile signal can be unreliable in remote areas.
Things to see and do
The Edakkal Caves hold ancient carvings and need a short climb. Banasura Sagar Dam is a large earth dam with views of green islands. Soochipara Falls drops through a forested gorge.
Chembra Peak is a popular trek in the dry season. Pookode Lake suits a relaxed stop. Wildlife visits and plantation tours round out the list.
When to visit
October to May is comfortable for sightseeing. The monsoon makes Wayanad very green, but some trails and viewpoints close for safety when rain is heavy. Check what is open before you plan.
Getting there from Bengaluru
Wayanad is about 270 to 280 km from Bengaluru. Most travellers drive via Mysuru and Sultan Bathery, which takes six to seven hours. Wayanad has no airport or main railway station. The nearest is at Kozhikode, roughly 90 to 100 km away.
A sample three-day Wayanad plan
Day one: drive via Mysuru and visit the Edakkal Caves. Day two: Banasura Sagar Dam in the morning and Soochipara Falls after lunch. Day three: a short wildlife or plantation visit, then the drive back.
Practical tips for Wayanad
Choose one base for two nights, because the roads are winding. Check closure notices for treks and viewpoints in the monsoon. Carry insect repellent and a rain jacket in the wet months. Keep a spare day if your plans depend on a trek.
Where to stay and who Wayanad suits
Stays range from plantation homestays to larger resorts. Many sit among spice and tea estates and are quiet at night. Tell us your group size and we shortlist options in the area you prefer.
Wayanad suits nature lovers, couples and families who enjoy short walks and slow days. It is less suited to travellers who want nightlife or a long list of city sights. Many travellers combine it with Mysuru on the way, or with Coorg on a longer trip.
